Mission: Silent Veil
Starbase 621 filled the view port with the quiet majesty unique to Federation engineering. Outside the broad windows of the captain's ready room, repair tenders drifted methodically around the Endeavour. Work bees darted between docking pylons like schools of metallic fish, their running lights tracing intricate patterns against the blackness of space. From this distance, the Sovereign class star ship appeared almost untouched by her recent ordeal. Her graceful lines remained as elegant as the day she had left the San Francisco Fleet Yards.
Only those who had walked her corridors knew differently. Hull plating bore fresh welds where emergency repairs had already begun. Entire sections of her primary sensor array remained offline, wrapped in scaffolding and force field containment while engineers assessed the damage inflicted by the three unknown warships whose technology had outclassed anything Starfleet Intelligence had anticipated.
Inara stood quietly before the view port, hands folded behind her back. She had been reading the latest engineering estimates only moments before, but the reports now rested untouched on her desk. There came a point where numbers ceased to matter. It would take four to five days to restore the Endeavour to full operational status.
The chime at her door sounded softly. Without turning, Inara called "Enter," while keeping her gaze on the view.
The ready room doors parted with a gentle hiss and Teya entered with her usual measured confidence, the Bajoran first officer carrying a padd tucked beneath one arm. She paused just inside the doorway, offering a respectful nod. "You wanted to see me, Captain?"
Inara turn from watching the stars, a faint smile touching her features as she did so. "I did. Please, come in," she said.
Teya crossed the room, noting immediately the collection of reports spread across the captain's desk.
Inara gestured toward the chair opposite her desk before taking her own seat. "How are the repairs progressing?"
Teya settled into the chair. "Better than expected," she replied as she consulted the padd briefly. "Engineering believes the structural damage was more superficial than initially feared. Lieutenant Commander Tyler estimates another seventy two hours before the warp systems undergo final certification."
"In other words, we're staying awhile," Inara said with a slight nod. "I expected as much."
Silence settled comfortably between them. It was one born of familiarity rather than uncertainty. During the short time they had served together, Inara had come to appreciate Narell's quiet steadiness. The Bajoran possessed an ability to separate emotion from decision without ever becoming cold, something invaluable in a first officer. Eventually, Inara slid a different padd across the desk. "This arrived from Starfleet Command shortly after we docked."
Teya accepted the padd. As she began reading, her expression shifted almost imperceptibly. "Personnel transfers," she muttered softly.
"Yes," Inara said as she leaned back in her chair and allowed Narell a few moments to read the report.
Teya continued reading, pausing on several names that were highlighted. "We're losing quite a few people," she finally commented.
Inara folded her hands. "We are," she said.
Teya looked up. "Is there any particular reason?"
"The official one?" A slight smile crossed Inara's face as she replied. "'Operational requirements.'"
"The unofficial one?" Teya asked darkly, knowing that there was always something more.
"The unofficial one is that Starfleet has been paying very close attention to everything that's happened since I assumed command," Inara said in a flat neutral tone.
The first officer understood immediately. "They're reacting to decisions you've made since being placed in command," she said.
Inara leaned back and nodded. There was no need to speak.
Teya looked down again at the transfer list and one name caught her attention. "How did Commander Tyler get transferred off so quickly?"
"He requested the transfer himself," Inara said.
"Because of the incident with Lieutenant Ros?" Teya asked.
Inara gave a small nod. "There has been a quiet shift in engineering ever since the incident and the disciplinary action that resulted from it. More people have taken to disliking him, and he's noticed. I also understand that his reputation as an engineer was slightly exaggerated when he was transferred to the Endeavour."
Teya nodded in understanding. In truth, she hadn't liked Tyler herself, but overcoming such situations was a requirement of a Starfleet officer. "I don't see a replacement for him," she said carefully.
"I have someone in mind, but I need to approach her carefully," Inara said.
Teya raised her eyebrows as she looked up. "You're considering Ros for the position?" she asked. "How do you think that will look to the crew?"
"I'm considering Ros because of her experience and knowledge, not because everyone in engineering likes her more than Tyler," Inara said. "But, I will make it clear that my decision is because of her skills as an engineer, nothing more."
Teya smiled faintly but nodded and let the issue drop. "I see we're also getting a new chief science officer as well as a chief helm officer and chief medical officer," she said.
"All who are experienced officers, which is good because the majority of the others transferring to the Endeavour are fresh out of the Academy," Inara said.
Teya placed the padd carefully on the desk. Outside the ready room windows, one of the repair tugs drifted slowly beneath the Endeavour's saucer section. "I've been thinking," Teya said quietly.
Inara looked up.
"The new officers. They're going to arrive aboard a ship that's already been through something together. They'll be outsiders. The crew won't mean for it to happen, but shared experiences create invisible lines and sometimes new people coming into a group in this way can be unsettling," Teya said.
Inara nodded. "I know, but that's a part of life in Starfleet," she said. "There will always be changes."
Teya nodded in understanding. "I assume we have orders to return to the Badlands after repairs are complete?"
"No," Inara said. Leaning forward, she frowned. "Once repairs are completed, we will be given new orders. Starfleet has already assigned other ships to search the Badlands for whoever attacked us."
Teya blinked, but nodded slowly. "I guess that makes sense in a way," she said. Standing, she nodded. "I'll get on the transfers right away."
Inara nodded and watched Narell leave the ready room. Leaning back in her chair once more, she reached out and picked up a padd off of her desk and started reading. It was going to be an interesting week, of that she was certain.
